How should we choose the sashiko needle?

Generally speaking, long needles are recommended for stitching straight Moyozashi patterns or Hitomezashi patterns. For the circle based Moyozashi patterns or to stitch the curved lines, short needles would be better.

That’s why I‘m including the assorted one (the yellow packet) in the starter kit. If you are new to sashiko, try the yellow packet. They have rather large eyes and easy to thread the needles, too.

If you are looking for more longer ones, try the blue packet from Daruma. It includes three long needles only (66.7mm / 60mm / 54mm).

The needles from Misuya-Chube might be unique and different from other needles. Misuya-Chube is a long-established sewing supplier in Kyoto with a history of over 200 years. Their sashiko needles look thick and strong, and you may not like it at first. But lots of my course participants who purchased the ultimate hanafukin kit loved their needles and I got lots of requests to sell them separately. There are 10 same needles included in a packet, but I made 5 needles option available, too.
